Senior Engineer - Innovation, Steel Solutions Center

Reports to: Director of the AISC Steel Solutions Center

The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) invites applications a position in the Engineering and Research Department at the Senior Engineer level. The successful candidates will support innovative initiatives that promote and advance the use of structural steel within the Steel Solutions Center.

The American Institute of Steel Construction is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit technical institute and trade association dedicated to advancing the use of American structural steel and supporting the creative thinkers who build bright futures with it. The essential duties and responsibilities of a Senior Engineer - Innovation include:

  • Developing, or assist in developing, preliminary frameworks for potential research initiatives,
  • Conducting in-depth studies into areas focused on advancing structural steel design or construction,
  • Collaborating with the staff of the Steel Solutions Center, Engineering and Research Department, and/or other AISC/NSBA departments to solve larger-scale problems and identify areas of opportunity for further study,
  • Assisting with the development of outward-facing resources and publications,
  • Developing and maintaining digital resources, as appropriate,
  • Developing and managing novel initiatives and projects that will improve steel’s marketshare,
  • Participating in oversight committees for research and other projects, and
  • Supporting the SSC by answering questions and providing peer review for answers.

Other duties and responsibilities of a Senior Engineer - Innovation include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving as a secretary for one or more AISC committees,
  • Participating as a member of the Engineering Journal review board,
  • Participating in the activities at NASCC: The Steel Conference,
  • Writing technical papers, conference papers, and articles for Modern Steel Construction,
  • Presenting lectures on steel-related topics,
  • An ability to manage volunteers and consultants associated with the role,
  • Attending AISC department meetings and retreats, and
  • Carrying out special projects as assigned.

The following attributes and credentials are required of the candidate:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architectural engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related discipline with a structural emphasis. Master’s and/or doctoral degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) in one or more states (or the ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable time after hire); Structural Engineer (SE) license preferred.
  • Additional certifications appropriate to the steel industry (e.g., weld inspector certification, LEED certification, etc.) are a plus.
  • Minimum of five years experience in steel building design- and/or construction-related activities.
  • Proficiency with standard office productivity software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Workspace, and similar applications).
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD. Knowledge of other technical software and programming (e.g., Revit, RAM Structural System, Bluebeam, Python, etc.) is a plus.
  • Membership and leadership in other relevant professional organizations is desired.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Must be a United States citizen or authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to travel as needed (up to 25% of the time).
