Steel Shots: UAA’s New Sculpture

(Photo courtesy of T. Bart Quimby, professor emeritus at UAA)

A steel sculpture has been installed at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) and was dedicated last Friday. It joins the more than 170 AISC steel sculptures located on university and college campuses across the country that are designed to give students a visual understanding of steel framing and steel connections.

T. Bart Quimby, professor emeritus at UAA, and his wife, Sandy Quimby, paid for the labor to fabricate the sculpture, which was done at SteelFab’s Anchorage, Alaska facility (an AISC member and certified fabricator). SteelFab donated the materials, and UAA paid for the footing.

This past October marked 30 years since the installation of the original AISC steel sculpture on the University of Florida’s campus in Gainesville. For more about the sculpture, including a list of school locations and information on having one constructed on your campus, visit www.aisc.org/steelsculpture.
