Steel Shots: Flying High

Large steel trusses are rising for the retractable roof of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, future home to the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League and Atlanta United FC of Major League Soccer.

More than 200 trusses will support the 600,000-sq.-ft roof, which will be comprised of eight radially organized interlocking panels that form a central overhead oculus. When these panels slide open, the roof opening will span the length of the field past each end zone and across the field over new sideline patio seating. The 2-million-sq.-ft stadium will use approximately 23,000 tons of structural steel in total, which is being fabricated by Canam Steel Corporation (an AISC Member/Certified fabricator). The project’s design and construction team is made up of HHRM, HOK and BuroHappold Engineering.

The stadium is scheduled to open for the start of the 2017 NFL season and will seat around 71,000 spectators. Follow the project at http://newstadium.atlantafalcons.com.
