Steel Shots: SteelDay is Coming!

Last week AISC hosted a pre-SteelDay presentation and jobsite tour of the new Rutherford County Judicial Center, a six-story, 200,000-sq.-ft steel-framed structure in Murfreesboro, Tenn., just outside of Nashville. Representatives from project team members SidePlate, Schuff Steel and Bell & Associates Construction discussed the challenges of the project and solutions using the SidePlate field-bolted connection system, which saved over 350 tons of steel and used 50% fewer overall moment connections to keep the steel within budget. There’s only one week left until the structural steel industry’s eighth annual SteelDay (September 30). Have you made your plans yet? There are plenty of ways to get involved! Among the free events are dozens of steel facility and jobsite tours throughout the country.

Can’t leave the office? A webinar featuring a new documentary on one of America’s greatest bridge designers will be shown online from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on SteelDay and is available for continuing education credit. The film, Bridging Urban America, produced by sOlar eye communications, tells the intriguing story of Ralph Modjeski, acclaimed designer of many of America’s greatest bridges, and offers not just awe-inspiring views of these magnificent structures but also illustrates Modjeski’s life as an engineer, entrepreneur, artist and innovator. Visit www.steelday.org/webinar to register. You can view the film’s trailer at www.aisc.org/trailer.

And during the week of SteelDay (September 26-30), the public has the power to vote in two separate competitions. You can choose which projects entered in the 2017 IDEAS2 Awards competition deserve recognition for excellence in steel-framed building design via a People’s Choice competition at www.steelday.org/vote. And, in celebration of 30 years of the AISC Steel Sculpture, a teaching sculpture made up of various steel members and connections that can be found on more than 170 college and university campuses across the U.S., you can view creative photos of these sculptures entered by students on AISC’s Facebook page and vote for your favorites.
