International African American Museum

Located on the former site of Gadsden's Wharf in Charleston, S.C.--where some historians estimate 40% of enslaved Africans entered the U.S.--the new International African American Museum (IAAM) needed to commemorate the space without completely occupying it.

The building's elevated and cantilevered structural steel frame not only raises the entire structure 13 ft above a floodplain containing the African Ancestors Memorial Garden, but it also shields the museum from the elements in its high-wind, high-seismic location.

Find out more about how structural steel helps the IAAM preserve a crucial legacy at aisc.org/iaam!
